Rachel XA Petrie

Dr Rachel XA Petrie graduated from Edinburgh University in Medicine (MBChB, 1991) with an intercalated BSc (Hons) in Psychology (1989). She commenced basic training in psychiatry in Lothian (1993) and completed this in Tayside (MRCPsych, 1996). In 1996 she was awarded the Sim Research Fellowship (Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh). This funded preclinical research at the University Department of Psychiatry, Dundee leading to a PhD (graduated 2003). Her thesis title was “Rat hippocampal function following early life adversity and later life stress”. She returned to Lothian, and completed higher training in Psychiatry in 2006 with an endorsement in Rehabilitation Psychiatry. She has worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist (Addictions) in NHS Lothian since 2007 and is clinical lead for Midlothian Substance Misuse Service and Low Threshold Methadone Programme in Edinburgh. She maintains an active interest in research and audit, and enjoys the challenge of managing complex and dual diagnosis patients.
